A cold, semi-detached garage might not be the first place that springs to mind when you think of your insurance company, but it’s where we’re proud to say that GM started back in 2004.
And whilst our company has moved three times since then, we believe it’s important to remember our humble roots!
Gavin and Lee had been in said garage (with Gavin’s Dad’s carpet offcuts to keep us warm – talk about keeping it real!), for two years when we decided to make the move and rent our first ‘proper’ offices, in Cowick Street, St Thomas, Exeter. This coincided with the recruitment of an extra member of staff, somebody that is still with us now.
After seven years, we outgrew that and bought our next ‘home’ in Marsh Barton. After another five years, we outgrew that, and bought our current office building across the road, still in Marsh Barton but with a little more space for our growing team.
We believe that what keeps us motivated and determined, is the fact that we are a small team. We have grown organically, and have been together through plenty of ups and downs along the way. Where other brokers have grown through acquisition, we knew that wasn’t the GM way - we’ve grown organically, with a people-focused and client-oriented approach. After all, it’s the people at the heart of our industry that keep us going.
We know our staff. We know what makes them tick, and we do our very best to retain them and to ensure that they want to stick with us.
We know our insurance providers. We build up relationships with them, and in turn, they know our team too.
And we know our clients. But most importantly, our clients know us. If they call us, they’ll speak to somebody in our office, in Exeter. There’s no huge call centre, and no monstrous database for us to navigate our way around every time somebody calls.
With GM you’ve got a loyal, local team who wants to do the very best for you. At the helm are two people who started this journey in a garage - getting cold but, more importantly, getting ever more determined to succeed. We’ll never forget how we started, but we’ll always be grateful for the journey we’ve been on along the way.
